Boycott Arizona May Day March

The number of cities in California that will boycott Arizona for their newest legislation aimed at the hispanic population in the Southwest continues to grow.  San Francisco, Los Angeles and West Hollywood have joined together to boycott Arizona.  In addition to these cities, the Governor of California has threatened a state wide boycott as well.   The law that was passed in Arizona makes it legal for law enforcement to question individuals without probable cause solely based on their race.  The individuals questioned will be required to show proof of legal residency.  Read about Arizona’s new law here:  SB1070

The legislation submitted by SF, LA and WeHo would cut off all ties with Arizona, including businesses based in Arizona that currently do business in these cities.  In addition to these boycotts, calls for boycotts have been spreading across the internet on social networking sites.  See Boycott Arizona and 1 Million Strong Against the Arizona Immigration Bill SB1070 on Facebook.

Tomorrow, on May Day hundreds of thousands of protesters are expected to converge in downtown L.A.  Mayor Villaraigosa has encouraged all residents of Los Angeles to attend the march to show support for immigration reform and to stand against SB1070 enacted by Arizona.  Mayor Villaraigosa also stated:  “While we recognize that we must enact 21st-Century legislation to secure our borders and ensure the safety of all our citizens, the law signed by the governor of Arizona simply does not do this.”

“The Arizona law is not only misguided, it is unpatriotic and unconstitutional. I add my voice to strongly opposing this unpatriotic and un-American law. And I call upon our federal leaders to pass comprehensive immigration reform in its place,” Villaraigosa said.

Our Southern California family had plans to visit the Grand Canyon this summer, but have decided not to go in support of Boycott Arizona.  We do not feel comfortable spending our tourism dollars in a state that has blatant disregard for the rights of others.  We stand in support of our  friends, neighbors and all those whom we’ve never met who are hispanic.
