Most people don’t know this, but Los Angeles gets 25% of it’s power from Arizona. In an effort to counteract Los Angeles’ boycott of Arizona, threats have emerged to cut power to L.A. Los Angeles isn’t a stranger to power outages and rolling blackouts. It almost seems normal for most of us, so it is doubtful that Arizona’s threat will be of any concern to most residents of Los Angeles who value the rights of others regardless of their skin color.
However, the truth of the matter is that L.A. is part owner of both power plants in Arizona as noted by Austin Beutner, the General Manager of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, in his statement today: “We are part owner of both power plants, which are generating assets of the Department. As such, nothing in the City’s resolution is inconsistent with our continuing to receive power from those LADWP-owned assets.” Go to LADWP to read full statment. Go to the L.A. Times to read L.A. Mayor’s statement.
It seems as though Arizona doesn’t have the authority to pull the plug, but if they somehow decide to overstep their bounds…we (at Raising California) say “Bring it!” Why? Standing up for what is right is seldom easy and sometimes painful, but it has to be done regardless of the backlash. Viva Los Angeles!
